Born over twenty three years after their firstborn, Oliver Harry was the eleventh, and much loved, last child of Thomas Parry and Amelia Emily HUGHES and he was the first of their three sons to enlist after war was declared on the 4th of August 1914. Oliver was also the baby brother of my great grandmother, Esther Goldsmith HUGHES, whose brief marriage to Joseph HILLIARD produced my grandmother Robina Jessie, known as Jessie.Oliver remained a bachelor all his life and never left home - at least not until his obligation to his country compelled him to in 1914. As the only man in the family, along with his mother and sister, Esther, at 14 Lathom Avenue, Liscard, he was influential in the bringing up of his little niece, Jessie who was a forever in awe of her uncle who would chastise her if she so much as toyed with her food – she did so like to arrange her bacon around the edge of her plate to save until last! Before Oliver went off to France, to fight for the very last time, he promised Jessie that on his return he would never be cross with her again. Sadly he never made it back home to keep his promise to the little girl. This is Great Grand Uncle Oliver’s story.
