The Rock, Mock-Gothic, Mock-Tudor or Mock-Something building next to the Parish Church. Built 1874. Entrance on street between Parish Church grounds and Union Buildings - dated stone reads Union Club, 1874. Since then ground floor used as a florists shop (see photo under "The Rock" in file) and then as Lancs. and Yorks. Bank (later Martins, then Barclays). Barclays now (1975) owns the whole building. Red Lion Inn (q.v.) previously on this site. Appears in dirs. until 1871. Clarence Club occupied upper floors. Richard Pickering (q.v), a Tory, sec. in 1880. Peter Hardman, steward. Fletcher and Speight (q.v.) printers moved there from Silver Street c. 1900 (see photos of The Rock). In 1950s R.A.F. Association Club. Later (until 1974) the Pat Lupino Thompson (q.v.) ballet school met there.
