Main details of contents of diary include :- 1. Record of days worked on commissions as a self employed calico print block maker. 2. Agent for a firm of Manchester solicitors in the renting and maintenance of some small dwelling houses in Bury. 3. Liberal party interests with R.N. Philips M.P. Scrutineer & Canvasser. 4. President & Auditor for a small Bury Alliance Building Society (called Club sometimes) for 12 years. 5. Maker of name plates, printing stamps, and other small metal and wood articles. 6. Details of meetings he attended with Business, Church or Chapel (record of collections), Lectures and political talks. 7. Details of people entertained in his home - relatives, friends. 8. Routes of walks taken with friends, son, or alone. 9. Events and trips attended - shows and fairs, Chapel tea parties, weddings and visits to relatives, by train to Manchester, Blackpool, Leeds etc.10. Record of catastrophies (mill fires etc.) and deaths (relatives and Abraham Lincoln etc.) 11. Details of son George's career in teaching. The household accounts of William Carnes and Fanny Carnes (1811-1887) contains interesting details of their diet, costs of lighting, fuel, clothes, cleaning materials, furniture, rent, rates, extra help in washing and child minding, doctors charges etc. Also contains a photograph of William Carnes junior in 1830 when he was about 20 years old, and a photograph of William Carnes senior, father of the William Carnes who wrote the diary.
