Opened in 1925 after extensive alterations to 'Newmarket' - this had bad reputation- haunt of prostitutes etc. New image was ordered by Crown Brewery so front, back and much of interior rebuilt & atmosphere of gentlemanc club created - v. lavish furnishing, with gentlemen only room with club armchairs etc. Reckoned to be one of 3 haunts of gentry Palative Club, derby Hotel and George.
