Article in Bury Times, not dated. "Maypole on the square? Could Bury's traditional Whit Walks ever be replaced by a maypole in Union Square with children dancing to the music of brass bands? Sats Rev. Gerald E. Barlow, priest in charge of St. Francis House, Brandelsholme, in the current issue of "Unity", the interchurch magazine: "If it is true, as many people suspect, that the Whit Walks are on the way out and were only a period piece, then why can we not reintroduce the maypole on a May Day holiday? This would provide well-tried means of expressing our spring feelings: the colour and gaiety of a gala day the processing and the bands, dressing up in gay costumes and the wealth of talent for children's dancing to be found in Bury would make the old maypole and Morris dances come alive as they once were, and better. Think what a sight Union Square would be! An enormous pole with hundreds of children winding an intricate pattern round it the bandsmen really having their lungs stretched by the fast pace of the dance, parents who are past it watching indulgently as they take a little refreshment in the hot sun...Ah!...Could it ever be?"Mr Barlow asks.
