b. The Park 1857. Youngest daughter of Robert Needham Philips, by his 2nd marriage. Mr Philips was Liberal M.P. for Bury 1857-59 & 1865-85. Family originated from Staffs in 1659. In early 18th C. some members of the family came to M/cr & in 1747 opened a warehouse in Church st. Mr. Nathaniel Philips, Anna's greatgrandfather was one of the early partners. In 1780 robert Philips, Nathaniel's son built the Georgian Mansion at the Park. Robert's eldest son Mark, born 1800 became one of the first 2 M/cr M.P.s after the Reform Bill. He was responsible for getting a Bill passed to levy a penny rate for the provision of parks and open spaces in M/cr. Anna's father was High Sheriff of Lancs in 1857. Family were staunch Unitarians-Stand Mansion & est. were purchased on 24/3/1948 by Wh. UDC after the promise of £7250 from PW B.C.
